In his series Stories from the Bible That Have Never Been Told, Joe
explores the boundaries between form and not form. As you gaze at the
paintings, forms reveal themselves from seemingly abstract areas of
color. In the same way, subtle allusions in myth and story can form
themselves into powerful messages for us as we "live with" or "live
into" their details.

In his Language of Mystery series,
Joe paints the elements of story - setting, characters, mood, tension,
texturing - and lets the viewer fill in the details of plot, weaving
whatever story is "right" in that moment. Another day, a different story
- just like the stories we tell ourselves in our own lives.
